Medieval Times: An Evening of Food and Jousting Fun

My daughter Chloe is really into reading stories with a medieval plot. Specifically, she is a huge fan of Tamora Pierce's young adult fantasy books about girl warriors in medieval times. Her favorites are the Protector of the Smalls series, and the Songs of the Lioness quartet. During spring break, I suggested that we go visit Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament just for sine medieval fun. Medieval Times had a two for the price of one deal in April, and while the medieval concept seemed cheesy, but it seemed to be worth going once just to check it out. Chloe was all for it.

Medieval Times, Buena Park, Ca.
Medieval Times has venues in several states. We went to the one in Buena park, California. It took us two hours to get there during rush hour traffic, which was a bummer. It should have taken no more than 45 minutes.  However, once we got there and were seated, we were treated to a quality show. There are six knights, who are trained in the medieval practice of chivalry, sword fight, medieval weaponry, horsemanship, and jousting, While we feast on the banquet, the studly knights, some with long flowing hair, engage in some very realistic jousting and fighting with each other. Of course, there is a damsel in distress, a dark force threatening the kingdom, and the knights, like those from King Arthur's court, must respond when duty calls.

Sir Red Knight
All in all, the show is unexpectedly entertaining. The fighting is realistic with real sparks flying when the swords cross. The horses are well trained, and the knights, they are very knightly. My only complaint is that there aren't any noteworthy roles for women.  Even the princess is merely a prop to showcase the good looking knights. It would be fun to incorporate a girl/women warrior into the plot.

The food, which we had to eat with our hands, served medieval style by wenches and pages, is quite good. The tomato bisque, roasted potato, half baby dragon (which tastes like chicken), the one spare rib, and apple turnover, are crude, but tasty. There is also a vegetarian option of stewed beans which we didn't opt for.

Overall, I highly recommend this show for a special night out, with or without the kids. But probably once every five years is special enough.
