Guilty Pleasure of Eating at McDonald's

My love/fear relationship with McDonald's began in 1978, when I first moved to the United States for high school.  My guardian's college-aged son wanted to "treat" me to a great American tradition: fast food at McDonald's. That was my first taste of a Big Mac, and it was heavenly. The double burger, the spongy soft sesame buns, mayonnaise and lettuce was just indescribably delicious. MacDonald's became a personal and family staple for decades: The fries, the milk shakes, the apple pie, were all enjoyable and affordable.

Some of McDonald's special menus were tasty too: When working in the San Gabriel valley during the late1990's and early 2000's some of the restaurants there were test serving deep fried chicken wings. I smothered mine in hot sauce and ate them for lunch, or in the car driving to and from work. I was sad when that item was eliminated.

My kids were brought up with the McDonald's Happy Meal. We loved the toys that came with them. Then, in during my daughter's 6th grade, or maybe it was when she was in 7th, she came home from school having read "Fast Food Nation", and suddenly refused to eat at McDonald's anymore. We also saw Morgan Spurlock's "Supersize Me" and saw the fries that don't ever go bad, and suddenly felt that we should stop eating at McDonald's so often. The relentless media portrayal of "pink slime" in the burgers, etc., all made my family to bring our McDonald's consumption to a grinding halt.

These days, the only trips to McDonald's that I still make occasionally is to get the breakfast Egg McMuffins and Sausage McMuffins. I contend that those are still the best breakfast fare you can find anywhere. Whenever we travel abroad, I will get myself one of the McMuffins at the airport, or in the streets of Paris just to satisfy my craving for American food.

Recently, I saw the banner outside McDonald's advertising the return of the McRib. I chuckled at the slogan "Joy & Cheer, McRib is here" I've never had the McRib, but I know many who look forward to it everytime it comes out. I think I will give it a try. On top of that, I read in the LA Times that McDonald's brought back my favorite fried chicken wings in the test market of Atlanta. If it ever comes back to LA, I will be a loyal customer of that item yet again! Sometimes, you just got to live a little.
