Handle Bar Coffee Roasters and La Superica in Santa Barbara

We headed out to the Central Coast for a couple of days of R&R. Along the way, we stopped by Santa Barbara  to get a coffee at the Handle Bar Coffee Roasters, and lunch at La Superica Mexican Restaurant.

Let me tell you, not all coffee is made equally. A lot of times, what passes as latte or espresso just tastes like an old lady's bath water. Ugh. But, this is not the case at the Handle Bar Coffee Roasters located at 128 E Canon Perdido St. #A in Santa Barbara, CA across the street from the Presidio. The lattee made there is so coffee fragrant and robustly strong that after you get one from this place, it's hard to get coffee from anywhere else.

As for La Superica, this Mexican restaurant on 622 N. Milpas St. is supposedly Julia Child's favorite Mexican Restaurant and always has a long line waiting out the door. I figured out the reason: the kitchen is so small and the chefs seem to be working one order at a time on one cook top (maybe two) that the orders get backed up. We waited about 40 minutes to get our order, but the wait was worth it. The pork tacos of handmade tortillas were delicious. The pico de gallo is so satisfyingly spicy and salty that I can eat a whole bowl by itself, but that would be rude to the other customers. I also discovered their posada, a stew made of  pork and other goodies. Sooo good. Definitely worth trying out.

posada. delicioso

Santa Barbara is always a nice road trip from Los Angeles, but knowing I can get great coffee and Mexican bites there is a bonus!
